2024 James Beard Media Award winner KJ Kearney and 2022 Community Business Academy Graduate, will launch his event series titled Bite the Power on Monday, July 29, in Charleston. Billed as “the world’s first traveling Black food storytelling event,” Bite the Power invites speakers to present a story focused on Black food for eight minutes.

The first event features Cheryl Day, the co-founder of Southern Restaurants for Racial Justice and co-owner of former Back in the Day Bakery in Savannah, Angell Troxler, the education outreach administrator for Charleston Wine + Food, and Femi Oyediran, the co-owner of Graft Wine Bar in Charleston.

Kearney’s goal is to take Bite the Power to several cities across America. “I can’t be everywhere,” he says, “and I don’t want to be everywhere, but I know these stories need to be told everywhere.”

For those not in the know, Kearney runs the popular social media account Black Food Fridays, which celebrates and highlights Black-owned restaurants, bars, food trucks, and vendors. He took home the James Beard Award for his work with Black Food Fridays.
